Protect Yourself Against Cyber Security Attacks

With highly publicized cyber attacks in the news almost daily, consumers have become more aware that the infrastructure of cyberspace remains vulnerable to potential threats and hazards. Cyber criminals are becoming more sophisticated in the ways they can steal information by working to disrupt, destroy or threaten our cyber networks. Strengthen your security by taking these simple steps:

  • Sign up for and review your free credit report from annualcreditreport.com.
  • Monitor your accounts closely and initiate alerts to monitor activity wherever possible.
  • Beware of scammers trying to entice you to reveal confidential financial details via email or phone.
  • Contact Melrose immediately about suspicious activity at (718) 658-9800.

Check Fraud And Scam Prevention

Despite the rise in mobile banking usage, check fraud continues to rise – reaching over $13 billion! Technology makes it easier to be defrauded. Fiserv reports that fraudsters use lost or stolen checks, cancelled checks found in your garbage, or a check you’ve placed in your mailbox to pay a bill. Take these preventive steps:

  • Store blank checks, statements and canceled checks in a secure place.
  • Track check orders and notify Melrose if your order doesn’t show up in a timely manner.
  • Report missing checks to us immediately.
  • Shred old canceled checks, bank account statements and ATM receipts.
  • Check your mailbox regularly and consider using a post office box if you can’t.
  • If you buy/sell through auction websites like Craigslist, use a reliable service like PayPal to exchange funds.

What To Know Before You Sell

17-00059_forsaleIf you’re looking to sell your home, here are a few things you should know – and do – before you put your house on the market.

  • Research Homes In Your Area – You may have a good idea of your home’s worth, but do check price points of neighborhood homes before setting your perfect selling price.
  • Know Your Loan Amount – Check your mortgage status: amount paid vs. amount owed.
  • Don’t Choose The First Real Estate Agent – First-time home sellers are often inexperienced and tend to go with the first agent they meet. Take time to interview potential realtors and learn how your home will be marketed.
  • Ask Questions – Selling your home is a big deal. Talk to friends and family, current and previous neighbors, and your township or borough about the process.
  • Clean Up, Spruce Up – Agents, and eventually buyers, are attracted to tidy, well-kept homes. It pays to make easy fixes like clutter-free space, fresh paint and a manicured yard.

Financial Freedom For Life

17-00059_man_mobileYou shouldn’t have to pay excessive fees and high rates to use your own money. That’s why Melrose has been providing affordable financial services to our community since 1922. Count on us for financial peace of mind and secure technology backed by federal insurance for the safety of your hard-earned cash.

As a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative, we give profits back to members rather than stockholders. We offer the same services of bigger banks, without the hassle and high fees. In 1922, we kept the American Dream alive from a small storefront in the Bronx by giving our all to each member.

Today, our member-first mentality lives on in Queens while we remain relentless about improving our services to better serve members’ needs. Melrose Credit Union’s strong foundation of service, commitment and stability delivers financial freedom to those we serve – people helping people.

ELIGIBILITY

Since Melrose Credit Union has an open New York State charter, we have no geographic or group affiliation membership restrictions. We have members residing all over the country! Plus, membership is extended to immediate family and household members of all existing members.

Relocating or retiring? No worries – the benefits of membership are always available to you.

your accounts active. These actions will halt the $5.00 per month dormancy fee and prevent future charges if these transactions are performed at least once a year. Stop by the branch or call (718) 658-9800 with questions.
